One of the many factors that affects the long-term viability of universities, and specifically Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), is adequate funding. In September 2023, the US Department of Education announced that HBCUs have been underfunded by $12 billion over the last 30 years. Likewise, while HBCU attendance has grown overall during that period, a US News and World Report survey noted that only approximately 11 percent of HBCU alumni give back financially to their respective institution. Given the importance of funding to the success and sustainability of HBCUs, what action items would you propose to your State leadership and HBCU alumni, respectively, to foster the necessary investment in your HBCU of choice.
